Susan Schulhof

My name is Susan Schulhof, and I am an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education at National Louis University. I have been dedicated to the field of Early Childhood Education since 2001, building on my previous experience in Elementary Education and Social Work. Beyond my academic role, I facilitate educational workshops and presentations at various professional conferences, including TEACHx, Teaching Professor, Leadership Connections, Opening Minds, and GoAEYC events, with a focus on professional and personal growth and reflection.
I am a proud first-generation graduate, with degrees from Harper Community College, Northern Illinois University, and a Master’s degree from National Louis University. My written work includes one nonfiction book, several fiction books focused on personal growth, and a blog focused on positivity. In my personal time, I enjoy traveling, hiking, reading, and spending time with my family and friends.
I grew up in a very spiritual household, believing in a connection to a higher power. A higher power that was there to guide me, help me to grow, and give me inspiration, if I would only listen. I was rarely without a notebook, and now my phone, to catch those random ideas because I never know which words and thoughts are important to keep track of.
Journaling was a way of life for me since I started writing in my diary as a little girl. I always wanted to know why people, including myself, act the way they do and make the choices they do. So thinking and reflecting on myself and other people became part of my day. Reading and my love of books became pivotal in this desire as well. When I read, I learn not just what the book is about, but also about life and people. I can experience so much more than what is only in my immediate life and circumstances.
I meditate weekly, and when I pray, I also listen for the answer to the questions I ask. I am guided by conversations with others, by situations I encounter, by books I read, by shows I watch, and by whispers in my heart and soul. I am guided when I listen, so I continually strive to connect with a higher power. These flashes of intuition become articles or books that I put down on paper to entertain, inspire, and even encourage others to make conscious choices in their lives. The words I write and share with the world feel very personal and vital to the type of life I want to live.
Using spiritual tools, journaling, reading, writing in my journal, or publishing books is how I lead my life guided by my intuition, by Spirit or God, and by love. When I think about how I will leave the world, I hope to be remembered for my kindness and love. But I also want others to see my strength and my desire to share ideas on how to choose and live their own highest and best life, whatever that looks like. Do they want the steps to listen to their intuition, to make their dreams come true, or to strive to be their best self? If a person does, then my books demonstrate how, through simple stories that lead the way.
